Sexuality and medicine: a brief historical perspective

SUMMARY

A brief historical summary is carried out on the evolution of the sexual morals as well as the evolution of sexual knowledge. Human sexuality in the prohibitive times and details of the figures who influenced in the present sexual knowledge, are covered in an important document: “The demands of the world-wide league for the sexual reform on scientific bases”, published in Copenhagen in 1929. Also the three elements that according to the WHO are basic to achieve the sexual health are exposed. Finally directives are set out to guide the work of the current doctors in the area of the sexuality, specially detection of social attitudes, recognition of variation and complexity of sexuality and personalization of the aid for people who consult sexual problems.
