Contraception of emergency, adolescence and social perspective

SUMMARY

Aim: Often the comment that the Emergency Contraception (EC) has become an “alternative form” that displaces the use of condoms. Seek, through the clinical history and discourse of adolescents, it is confirmed whether or not this perception.

Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study, a qualitative descriptive study. Discourse analysis and direct observation.

Site: Madrid Youth Health Centre.

Participants: 5,823 medical records, 17 interviews with women from 16 to 19 years, 3 focus groups with 15 participants.

Measurements: Epidemiological profile of users of emergency contraception. Efficacy of AE. Representations for the use of condoms and AE.

Results: The AE does not make a significant impact on the use of a condom or not. Its use is associated with social representations and the affective imagination.

Conclusions: The AE is an effective method with few side effects. It is used due to accident in the use of condoms (73.1%). The feeling of trust and relational proximity decreases the protection against sexually transmitted infections.
