M. Pérez Bauer, S. Hernández Anadón, S. Crispi Cifuentes, O. Calviño Domínguez

SUMMARY

Objective: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of women who asked for voluntary abortion.

Methodology: We assessed the clinical history from the “Sexual and Reproduction Health Program” in Primary Health Care, the contraceptive method used and mistakes of use, previous abortions and the characteristics of women who had abortions.

Results and conclusions: 1.073 women with a mean age of 25,9 years, 86% with elementary studies, 81,5% without social problems. The mean number of abortions increased in the period analysed. Most women didn’t use neither any contraceptive method nor postcoital pills. Out of the people using condom, 28,6% reported having broken it and 20,8% didn’t use it sometimes. Out of the people taking oral contraceptives, 68% forgot some pills. 4% took postcoital pills. 16,4% have had a previous abortion (3,5% more than one abortion). Most women with elementary studies didn’t use any contraceptive method and most women with intermediate or high studies used condoms.
