Medicalization, eroticism and
sexual diversity: a sexological critique of the DSM-IV-TR (II part)
B. Useche Aldana, PhD
SUMMARY
The first part of this article analyzed
the limitations of the theoretical models behind the classification
of sexual dysfunctions in the DSM-IV-TR. It also presented an alternative
approach oriented to surmount reductionisms and to reject the medicalization
of sexuality with commercial purposes. This second part presents
a critique of the DSM-IV-TR section on Gender Identity Disorders.
The critique is founded on recent studies about the evolution of
sexuality, an analysis of the current globalization of market economy,
and a perspective that gives priority to the erotic function over
the reproductive function of sexuality.
KEY WORDS
Sexology, DSM-IV-TR, gender identity disorders, evolution
of sexuality, capitalism, sexuality.
