Associated variables to the prisoners’ sexual satisfaction

SUMMARY

Objective: To identify variables related to the person, prison situation, romantic relationships and human sexuality which are significantly associated to the sexual satisfaction.

Design: Descriptive transversal study.

Emplacement: Topas Prison (Salamanca).

Participants: 80 inmates divided into 21 Spanish males, 39 foreign males, 10 Spanish females and 10 foreign females. Eight inmates did not accept or abandon the study. They were substituted by other inmates of the same sex and nationality.

Main measurements: It has been studied the relationship between the sexual satisfaction and the inmates’social skills, monthly incomes, total time in prison, time in prison since the last entry, frequency of sexual relationships, possibility and frequency of contact with a couple, and the satisfaction with the actual romantic life.

Results: The inmates’ sexual satisfaction is significantly correlated to the possibility and frequency of contact with a couple, the satisfaction with the present romantic life, and the frequency of sexual relationships. This last variable is the most relevant one. The female inmates show to be more satisfied because they point out to have a higher frequency of sexual relationships. Their prototype profile is a women with a couple relationship inside the same prison. The mens’profile is a person without a couple relationship.

Conclusions: The male and female inmates who are more sexually satisfied, have more sexual relationships, see more often and live closer to their couple, and are more satisfied with their actual romantic life.
