Sexuality and breast cancer: contributions from the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

SUMMARY
Therapeutic possibilities of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based intervention over breast cancer patients’ sexuality are showed. This new therapy is showing its effectiveness in treatment of diverse psychological problems, and is beginning to be applied to sexual dysfunctions and problems. 8 non-metastasic breast cancer patients and their partners took part in this experience. It included an informative session and a weekend workshop whose main activity was an ACT-based group psychological intervention centered in values clarification and barriers identification and acceptance training. Participants showed a high satisfaction and intervention contributed to deal with information needs, normalizing psychological barriers, generating a place for couples communication and prioritizing values.
