Current state of the pharmacologic treatment of hypoactivesexual desire disorder in women
F. Cabello Santamaría

SUMMARY

Experts agree to consider the hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) as the most complex sexual dysfunction. Current definitions of the disorder lack accuracy; thus, different authors diagnose HSDD in different clinical situations. This situation has created an enormous variability in prevalence studies that claim the HSDD is the most common sexual dysfunction and has leaded to a large number of studies to develop effective medications, mainly those that have effect on the arousability (vaginal pulse amplitude), psychiatric medications and hormonal treatments. Although in some cases medications can be an excellent support (especially testosterone for women with HSDD because of bilateral ooferectomy), we do not have yet any medications that increase desire regardless of its aetiology.

KEY WORDS

Desire, arousal, hormones, psycho-pharmacology.
