SUMMARY
The objective of the present study is to find out what image the family of elderly institutionalised people has of nurses.
This study was carried out in the elderly people centres of the Instituto Foral de Bienestar Social (IFBS) of Álava (Arana, Txagorritxu, Ajuria, Samaniego) from December 1999 to May 2000.
The subject of this study were 80 relatives, who answered to a questionnaire. Our research is based on this questionnaire, and set forth on an observational, analytic and transverse design.
The questions of the questionnaire referred to the implication of family in taking care of an elderly person, the social and professional image of nurses and the satisfaction of the family with regards to the services offered of the old people’s home.
The results showed that the knowledge of relatives of our profession was greater than our expectations; they can distinguish which were the real nurse’s activities from those of the others medical assistance. On the other hand, the most valued quality of the nurses was human quality (patience, responsibility and kindness).
It is the responsibility of all of us, who are training in this work, to spread an appropriate image of this professio.
