SUMMARY
Foundation: To evaluate
the nursing personnel’s knowledge (nurses and assistants of
nurses) of a general hospital, before and after their participation
in theoretical formative workshops and resolution of practical cases
on urinary incontinence (UI) in the elderly, imparted by the Geriatric
Unit.
Method: We analyzed
the anonymous surveys, executed by the nurse personnel, before and
after to their attendance to the workshops. The questionnaire consists
of 5 articles that pick up aspects related with the prevention,
aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of the elderly urinary incontinence
(UI).
Results: 175 professionals
were trained. A change was observed in the knowledge’s acquired
by the nursing personnel, after its participation in the workshops
on UI. Previously to the workshop 75 (43%) considered UI normal
in elderly in opposition to 7 (4%) later; 135 (77%) didn’t
know any type of UI previously against 7 (4%) later; 109 (62%) didn’t
can set up the diagnosis of UI against 7 (4%) later; 109 (62%) didn’t
know how to identify any type of nurse treatment on UI against 12
(7%) later; 60 (34%) didn’t know how prevent UI, in geriatric
patients hospitalised, in opposition to 10 (6%) later to the workshop.
Conclusions: The
UI continues being one of the geriatric syndromes unknown in the
hospital clinical practice. The formation in this case, imparted
by the Geriatric Unit, allows to recognise the UI as a problem of
health, to improves meaning the nursing personnel’s knowledge’s,
on the measures of prevention in geriatric patients hospitalized,
as well as on the procedure to apply to start a nurse diagnosis
and treatment, in each clinical type of UI.
