Design: A observational, descriptive, transversal study was performed.
Setting: The study was carried out in four of the six geriatric residencies in Piera (Barcelona-Spain) over a period of time between November 2002 and January 2003.
Participants: 64 out the 230 residents complied with the criterion of inclusion and not those of exclusion at the time of data-collection.
Methods: Data-collection was undertaken with a self-completed questionnaire.
Results: The residents believe that the residencies cover their biological, social and spiritual needs to the tune of 98%, 98%, 92% and 88%, respectively. Most of the residents (96%) say that they feel accompanied at the residency, which creates a climate similar to family life for 71% and feeling as though they were at home 45%.
Conclusions: Piera’s geriatric homes are one of the social solutions for the town inhabitants.
