Nursing in Tenerife and its transformation towards Gerontology: challenge or reality
Vera Iglesias, Mª.D.

SUMMARY

Purpose: To know the degree in which nursing in Tenerife is transforming towards gerontology.

Methods: A descriptive study was designed and a questionnaire was passed to 178 nurses of the Health Area of Tenerife. The results of the survey were treated under descriptive statistics using R-Sigma program.

Results: 55.88% had received specific training; 62.23% affirmed to know the concept of transformation towards gerontology; 83.82% believed necessary a health programme for elderly people.

Conclusions: Nursing formation about health care for elderly people is deficient. Nurses know the main changes from ageing but they don’t apply them. The degree of transformation of nursing towards gerontology is low in both levels of sanitary attention.
