Nurses’ knowledges about pressure ulcers and their determinants
José Antonio Esperón Güimil, Dr. Francisco Luis Vázquez Vizoso

SUMMARY

Introduction: The appearance of a pressure ulcer (UPP) is going to bring a whole series of negative consequences. It has been related the training of the nursing professionals to the decrease of the incidence of these sores.

Objective
: quantify the knowledge level of the nurses on UPP, as well as to establish if that knowledge level is associated to sociological characteristics and/or identificable professionals.

Material and methods
: transverse study of prevalence through questionnaire, designed ad hoc. The population of study was constituted by the nurses (n= 556) of the hospitals belonging to the Hospital Complexo of Pontevedra. They were measured, in a scale of 0 to 10 points, the Global Knowledge Punctuation (PGC-UPP) and partial knowledge aspects of UPP: Knowledge of General Aspects, Knowledge of Prevention, Knowledge of Treatment and Cares.

Results
: The PGC-UPP is located in 7 points, being the smaller punctuation in the aspects related to the Treatment and Cares of the UPP. They do not exist differences estatistical meaningful in the knowledge in function of the sex, of the years in the service and of the areas of activity. The age of the nurses is associated in negative sense with the knowledge of UPP, though these alone differences present statistics meaning in the Prevention aspects. With the profession years reduce the knowledge about all the aspects of the UPP is reduced with the profession years. The greater is the professional experience in the managing of the UPP, the greater are the knowledges. Accomplishing courses, attending congresses, etc., and making it recently is associated with a greater knowledge level.

Discussion
: It is still important the number of nurses that have wrong information on certain aspects of the UPP, above all in what is referring to the Prevention and in greater measure on the Treatment and Cares. The training has a positive effect to improve the knowledge of the nurses on the UPP.
