Use of multiplayer bandage system
in a venous ulcer
K. Sharp, H. Baxter
SUMMARY
Introduction:
Chronic venous insufficiency is a very common pathology. It is calculated
that an average of 5 % of adult population suffer it. One of the
highest manifestation are venous leg ulcers what it means about
60- 90 % of all the leg ulcers. Venous insufficiency and venous
leg ulcers have increased in the last years due to a sedentary life
style and also with the increasing agedness of population.
Observation and development: It is
calculated that about 80 % of venous leg ulcers are not being treated
with the appropriated therapy. Compression therapy that should be
applied in these ulcers is not yet the first choice treatment.
Clinical case: A woman, 83 years old
with a venous leg ulcer of 13 months of evolution. After an assessment
a four layer bandage system ( Profore®) was applied. After 21
days of treatment the ulcer was finally closed.
Conclusions: The use of a multiplayer
bandage regime in venous leg ulcers increase the healing time and
has more advantages comparing with the traditional healing system
without compression therapy. It is cost- effective, more comfortable,
and sure and easy to apply. In addition it could be in place up
to seven days without reapplications needing.
