A healthy old man: plan of care based on D. Orem’s theory s
Mª del Castillo García Velázquez

SUMMARY

This article deals with a plan of care based on Dorothea Orem´s Theory. This has been applied to a healthy old man until recently, the care of old men on the part of nurses has been centered on the multipathology which they suffer, and consequently on the complexities derived from it. However, healthy old men also need the care of nurses due to he necessity of physico-psychological adaptations and the loss of vision, hearing or movement which the natural process of agein brings about with it. Since ageing may suppose a decline in old men’s well-being, nurses’ intervention is then advised in order to help these people in their adaptation (new situation) and to the counteract the effects of previously mentioned loss in this new stage of life.

This work tries to illustrate a plan of care which put into practice with a healthy old man and which kind of intervention on the part of the nurse, will be necessary.

KEY WORDS

Old man, nursing, self-care, necessity, loss.
